Evaluation.

How does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real life media products and represnt particular social groups?

With our opening scene of 'Where's my Mr.Right', we wanted to conduct a feel good film with many realistic conventions of a Romantic Comedy film seen in the film industry today. We did this by the use of characters, settings, props and themes. We used the typical stereotype character of the genre of film we were creating, which was an unloved female who drastically wants to find love throughout the film. We found that this was the typical character represented through the Romantic Comedy genre in our research, with such characters as Bridget Jones unlucky in succeeding in love, and wanting to be loved in return with a depressing attitude. So we based our character in the film to have a depressing tone, and personality throughout the opening scene. Also having the two female characters in the opening scene, links with the research we found in Romantic Comedy films, most females always have a best friend that challenges their own personality represented as being an opposite,  creating a loud, bubbly party girl character to be paired with the dull, timid character. We used the typical characters as we all thought that it was going to be the best option in creating an effective opening scene for the genre, as we noticed that these were the two characters that were most noticeable in our research. In our opening scene we portray two different types of women in society, that link in with the the Romantic Comedy genre. The main character being the typical 'depressed', lonely women who is having difficultits in finding a well suited relationship with a man. This character is introduced immediatley in the opening scene, the titles fitted represent to the audience what type of film it is going to be by the typography used, and also by the first portrayal of the character as she is seen to be crying and unhappy. The second social group introduced when the phone call takes place, is the character of a stong, independant,  bubbly person. By the phone call the relationship between the two characters is set for the audience, which when conducting our research we found that many Romantic Comedy films do also.

What kind of Media insitution might distribute your media product and why

We chose to have Paramount Pictures for our film institution, in our research conducted together we found that one it's one of the best film insitutions in Romantic Comedy's and found that it was a very popular insitution in the genre. Ten of the top grossing films from Paramount included many films in the Romantic Comedy genre, showing us that Paramount is a top ranked insitution creating a success for our film to be distributed by them. In our research it was very clear that Paramount was a well known film insitution globally, and would be the best one to use as our film company, a fan base would have already been created from previous films and audiences would recognise previous films from Paramount have been extremly successful globally, so that our film must be up with the high status of their previous films distributed.

Who would be the audience for your Media product?

Primary Audience: Our target audience for 'Where's My Mr.Right' is between the ages of 15-25, this is because it is the main cinema audience that would want to go and see a film in the genre we chose, and it's a very feminine type of genre, which would appeal more to this age group than say a setteled down lady with children. If we targeted a wider audience range, it would help bring in a greater audience adding to an increase in box office succes, however with the Romantic Comedy genre the age range we have chosen fits perfectlely, as the film contains elements of comedy, and obviously the main one romance and drama which we all appeal exceptionally well with the primary audience creating a success. The audience that would most likely to watch the film would be women, the film focuses more on the life of a young lady and tries to portray the two most typical sterotypes of women, and how they deal with situations around relationships and love. The female audience can relate to what problems and feelings the film is trying to represent, as they could have experienced the characters problems theirselves.

Secondary Audiece: Would be the male gender. There is a possibility that our film would also appeal to the male audience, as the film does involve males throughout the film durig differet relationships. Also at the end of the opeing scene, many pictures of different males come up representing that the males are just as important in the film as the females, which is how we wanted to reach out to male audience. The film is all about different relationships, and males play a huge part in each relationship in the film. Each man we saw at the end of the opening scene, has a section in the film of their own story focusing on the different types of males and how they deal and cope in relationships. Not only showing how the main femlae character is coping with romance but also letting the males how their input too. Which would appeal to the male audiece as they would be able to relate back to the storyline too.

How did you attract/address your audiece?

The song we used in the opening scene is very catchy, even though it's not a song that is very well known it is the type of song that would attract the audience as it's extremly cheerful, creating an extreme contrast with the atmosphere and the personality of the character during the beginning of the opening scene making the scene unique and stand out to the audience. The name of the song is "Two Birds", representing a female and male character in a strong romantic bond. As the film is about a female finding a male partner to have a relationship with, the lyrics and the title of the song is an excellent connotation of the whole film of being with a partner and having that close romantic relationship. However the title of the song could also link with the two female characters in the opening scene, Zoey and Donna and represent their bond as friends.

We wanted to create something unusual, unique and eye catching to attract the audience, creating the picture college of the characters past relationships at the end of the opening scene was very effective, it's a very fresh idea which when conducting our research we didn't find any Romantic Comedy with the same idea. Throughout the opening scene we are shown this depressing, melancholy character, but when shown the pictures at the end of the opening scene we see the same person but with a whole new personality creating an effective contrast attracting the audience and leading them on to be wondering and asking the question why has this energetic, bubbly girl changed into such a 'plain jain' charcter. Creating the audience to want to carry on waching the film and find out what has happened to this character. The whole story is basically shown through the pictures in a short amount of time, leading on to the depth of the storyline to develop giving the audience a little taste of what is about to come during the film. We also flipped the storyline around in the opening scene, we show the main character of how she is in life now, but at the end of the scene it shows how she used to be, building up suspence as to what is going to happen next to the young lady, setting the narrative to continue.

What have you learnt about Technologies from the process of conducting this project?

The use of all the different technologies if very difficult, and a  very long process to get the best outcome possible. However I've enjoyed the challange of getting used to using the technology and being able to create things in our opening scene that we didn't even think were possible to create. The slide transitions we found whilst researching are from the opening scene of the film 'Definitely Maybe', whilst watching that films opening scene we thought the slide tranisitions very unique, and unusual as we hadn't seen them in any other films we conducted our research on. We didn't want to completley copy the idea from the film, so we added our own interpretation to make it more unique to our film. When first starting to create the slide tranitions, we had many difficulties in getting used to the software we were using to create the effect. It took us ages, and we kept on having to practice and go over each step to create the vision we wanted during the opening scene. Having the use of othe different types of technology is brilliant, we had a few continuity errirs when putting our slide transitions into place, but fortunatley with the effects we were using the slide tranisitons fitted into the sequences and disguised the errors we had made whilst filming. The final outcomes of the slide tranisitions came out much better that we anticipated from the use of the technologies we hadn't come across in our research.

Being able to use different types of technologies whilst editing our opening scene, made us able to create a sequence that would appeal alot more to our targer audience, and made it more interesting and exciting. The skills we learnt from getting used to the technlogies, made us able to go back to certain bits in our opening scene and add edits that would create a more effective scene. We the use of the wide range of technologies we were able to fix continuity errors making the different clips flow better, and widen our own range of skills in the editing process.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From the preliminary task, working up to the final project. The main thing I have learnt is to never get a little amount of footage, re shot every shot for the scene in different angles as sometime continuity errors take place, that go un noticed untill the editing process. There was many times, where we thought we had the correct footage, but when putting it together it didn't have the flow we wanted to create. We had to continuously re shot certain shots, such as the car scene, we had to shot a point of view shot, behind the shoulder shot, one from the outisde looking into the car, and from the doorway of the car. When the shot we wanted to create was achieved we had to do the process again but for different footage. From the previous tasks I think teamwork plays a major part in creating a successful piece of work. In our final project everyone got to equally have a go at editing, and filming the footage. Everyone's idea's should be put into consideration, then building upon their idea adding everyones own interpretation gains brillaint ideas and concepts for footage which lead to the final product turning out how we wanted it to be. Also from previous tasks leading up to our opening scene, I've learnt to create and film as many camera movements and angles as possible. You never really know, how well a shot is going to fit in till the editing process so having a wide variety of different shots and movements to use will lead to finding the most sutibale shot to have in the scene.
